Allocated staff can now initiate one to one or group conversations with students using the Chat tab in Teams.
What do you need to know?
- Only allocated staff can initiate supervised chats (known as FULL access). Please seek IT support if you would like full access.
- Other staff can be invited into supervised chats with students but cannot initiate them (known as LIMITED access). Chats with all other staff is otherwise unaffected.
- ALL students will see the chat tab BUT they won't be able to start chats themselves UNLESS that chat is with a member of staff with full rights (known as RESTRICTED access)

- A successful chat session can be text, audio or video chat - you must ensure you comply with relevant policies regarding communicating with students.
- Once a supervised chat is initiated, the supervisor (FULL) is unable to leave the chat whilst there are still RESTRICTED users in it.
- Once a chat is finished with, it is important that you close it down by ejecting the students (find out how)
- Ejecting the students means they continue to have access to the chat text up to that point, but they can no longer participate
- Once there are no students, you can leave the chat
- If the chat is not closed properly, there is a small risk that the students might at some point have an unsupervised chat.
